Amputation injuries to body parts are among the most severe types of physical trauma. In addition to being an extreme physical impairment, losing a limb or body part can leave a lasting impact on your mental and emotional wellbeing.
Depending on the nature of an amputation injury and the body part that was amputated, an amputee may need to have numerous surgical procedures and rehabilitation sessions. This can include months or years of physical therapy to recover, including receiving training and fitting for a prosthesis, and occupational therapy.
Expenses related to a traumatic amputation can go on for years, and thus the estimated cost of an amputation injury can be exorbitant.
A highly experienced amputation injury lawyer will help amputees handle the insurance claims process to obtain the recovery and monetary compensation they deserve.
Steve is one of a kind. He truly cares about you, he takes every step possible to make sure the insurance company pays for your injuries. This is the attorney you want on your side when involved in an injury.

Different Types of Amputation Injuries
There are two main types of amputation injuries:
Traumatic Amputations: A traumatic amputation is the partial or complete loss of a limb that occurs when the limb is severely damaged or crushed. This type of injury often happens as the result of an accident, such as a car accident or a fall from a height. The affected limb may be completely severed from the body, or it may still be partially attached.
If you have suffered a traumatic amputation, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. The affected limb will need to be cleaned and dressed to prevent infection. You may also need surgery to close the wound and to remove any damaged tissue. In some cases, prosthetic devices can be used to replace the lost limb.
The recovery process following a traumatic amputation can be long and difficult. Physical therapy may be necessary to help you regain strength and mobility.
Surgical Amputations: Surgical amputations are a type of surgery that involves the removal of all or part of a body part. They're typically performed when a person has an infection or injury that can't be treated any other way. Amputations can also be done to remove a cancerous tumor.
The decision to have an amputation is never easy. It's usually made after other treatment options have been tried and haven't worked. The surgery itself is very serious and carries many risks, so it's not something that's done lightly.
Recovery from an amputation can be long and difficult. There's physical pain and discomfort, as well as emotional trauma. Some people experience depression and anxiety after an amputation. It's important to have support from family and friends during this time.
Amputation injuries usually fall into one of two categories:
Upper Limb Amputations:
- Shoulder amputation: removal of the entire arm, including shoulder blade and collar bone
- Above-the-elbow amputation: removal of the arm above the albow
- Elbow amputation: removal of the forearm at the elbow
- Transradial amputation: removal of the arm below the elbow joint
- Wrist amputation: removal of the entire hand and wrist
- Metacarpal amputation: removal of the entire hand upto the wrist
- Partial hand amputation: removal of fingers or thumb, parts of the fingers or thumb
Lower Limb Amputations:
- Hemipelvectomy: removal of the entire leg, including part of the pelvis
- Hip disarticulation: removal of the leg up to the hip joint
- Transfemoral amputation: removal of the leg above the knee
- Below-the-knee amputation: removal of the leg below the knee
- Ankle disarticulation: removal of the entire foot at the ankle
- Partial foot amputation: removal of one or more toes, affecting the person's abillity to walk and balance
Why an attorney is needed
Insurance companies often act only in their own best interests - meaning they do as much as they can, to pay you as little as possible.
For something as catastrophic as an amputation, there are many needs an amputee will experience.
A highly experienced amputation attorney can help you recover and be compensated for most, if not all of these needs, such as:
- Prolonged hospitalization
- Prolonged rehabilitation
- Past and future medical bills
- Past and future loss of wages
- Loss of wage earning capacity
- Future physical therapy
- Past and future prosthetic costs
- Future mental health therapy costs
- Future living accomodation adjustment costs (vehicle modifications, modification of residence)
- Pain and suffering
- Future costs for loss of enjoyment
- Compensation for embarassment, humiliation, and/or disfigurement
- Compensation for loss of enjoyment
- Loss of abillity to perform activities for daily living
An amputation injury attorney will help you navigate the entire legal process, from start to finish. Your attorney will also review any settlement offers from the defendant's insurance company and determine whether it's in your best interest to accept the offer, or whether you may be eligible for a higher settlement amount.
An amputation injury attorney will also communicate with the insurance company on your behalf, and negotiate the best possible financial settlement.

MY STORY

Compassion... honesty... rationality... these are all qualities you want in a lawyer. Heck, they’re qualities you want in anyone you know or do business with.
Unfortunately, people who have been injured don’t always get served by people who have these traits. Insurance companies are notorious for taking a hard line, acting as if the injured person is the one who did something wrong. Where’s the compassion in that?
Steve Heisler decided in 1996 that he was going to focus his law practice exclusively on injury cases. Since then, he has been representing injured people against insurance companies, disreputable medical practitioners and Big Pharma, and doing it with compassion, honesty and level-headed rationality.
Steve’s been a fighter his entire life. After a back injury ended his high school wrestling activity, Steve took up boxing. His boxing career included winning the 1979 Central Pennsylvania Novice Golden Gloves and the 1980 South Atlantic AAU bantamweight title. Being feisty and quick on your feet is a good thing both in the ring and in the courtroom!
Before Steve was admitted to law school, he went to work as an organizer and business agent for the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union, Local #7. It wasn’t long before he developed a reputation as trustworthy, reliable and, above all, a fighter. “He called one time after he had been carried out of the race track by eight security guards. Steve didn’t back down from anyone,” said Paul Richards, former Executive Secretary-Treasurer of Local #7. While with Local #7, Steve organized the vendors and concession workers at Camden Yards and housekeepers at Towson University. You don’t gain the respect of hardworking people if you’re not honest, caring and level-headed.
Steve graduated from the University of Baltimore Law School in 1988. Since that time, he has represented tens of thousands of injured people, helping them find some measure of justice after they were wrongfully hurt or lost a loved one due to someone else’s negligence.
A family man, Steve is married and has three children. A sports fan, he loves the Orioles, Ravens, Wizards, Capitals and all University of Maryland sports teams.
You can call Steve anytime at 1-833-LIMB-LAW (1-833-546-2529).
It costs absolutely nothing to see if you qualify for compensation for your amputation injury.
